Let’s debunk some myths about UV rays and children's sunglasses to ensure your kids eyewear is keeping them safe (not just cool!). Ultraviolet rays are a form of radiation that is given off by many objects such as light bulbs, fires and most prominently the sun. Although the sun is the best source of vitamin D, the radiation from the sun which is not visible to the human eye can cause sunburn, premature ageing, skin damage leading to skin cancer and our foremost concern, eye damage.
Myth #1 - Dark tinted sunglasses means UV protection
There is a myth that simply wearing dark tinted sunglasses protects your eyes from these harmful rays. In actuality, there is no correlation between darker tint and UV protection. Experts have even said that having dark tinted sunglasses without UV protective lenses can do more damage to your eyes than not wearing sunglasses at all. This is because wearing sunglasses with dark tint allows you to stare at the sun without squinting. Squinting is the eyes natural response to protecting the eyes from damaging light.
Myth #2 - My children's sunglasses say polarized and has anti glare so they're covered!
Another myth is that sunglasses with polarized or anti-glare lenses is all you need to protect your eyes from UV rays. Although these glasses provide image clarity and allow for better vision when fishing, driving (their electric jeep) or playing sports in the sun, it has nothing to do with UV protection.
Myth #3 - Only adults need to wear sunglasses
Children spend just as much, if not more time outdoors than adults. Protecting your child’s eyes from harmful UVA and UVB radiation is just as important as reminding them to put on a jacket when it’s cold. Kids need eye protection too! Teaching your child to carry sunglasses from a young age helps them develop good eye health. If your child is prone to losing their sunglasses, pair it with a colourful eyewear retainer that they can wear around their neck.
