Did you know that nearly half of the average person’s UV exposure happens before the age of 18? Protecting our children from the sun can be a full time job! Risk of skin cancer and eye damage can be avoided by being persistent with protecting our kids from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Playing in strong sunlight at the pool, beach or outside at the park are not the only places that UV rays can cause damage. Parents must be aware of UV protection for their children's eyes and skin even in grey overcast weather. Here are some products and tips to avoid sun damage:
PLAY IN THE SHADE!
Plan for indoor activity during midday when the UV rays are strongest and most harmful. If your children plan to play outside, seek shade. Have them play under a tree or an umbrella. Avoid the burn before it happens.
HATS ARE COOL TOO!
Hats are an easy way to avoid the sun too! They can protect your child’s face, scalp, ears and neck. Bucket hats, sun hats and western hats are the best options when it comes to above the neck protection. If your kid prefers a baseball cap, be sure to apply sunscreen on their ears and neck.

PROTECT CHILDREN'S EYES WITH SUNGLASSES!
Protecting your children’s eyes with sunglasses can save them from cataracts disease caused later in life. Be sure that your children’s eyewear are both 100% UVA and UVB protective. Sunglasses can be a fun accessory for your child and wearing sunglasses at an early age can foster a good habit in eye protection.

COVER UP YOUR SONS and DAUGHTERS!
Cover up your kids with long-sleeved shirts, pants and skirts. Clothes can provide a great layer of UV protection, especially if they are made with tightly woven fabrics. If you’re playing at the beach or a pool, look for a brand of swimwear that offers UV protection or long sleeve pieces. Here is our fashion forward long sleeve swimwear pick for a girls or boys:

APPLY SUNSCREEN THEN RE-APPLY!
Applying sunscreen should be implemented in your kids’ daily routine! Much like brushing teeth to protect from cavities, applying quality sunscreen can protect your children from sun damage. Daily exposure without proper sun care can have serious effects on your child’s skin and eyes later in life. Generously apply sunscreen (minimum SPF 15) at least 30 minutes before going outdoors to allow for the cream to soak into the skin. Don’t forget to apply to areas that are regularly forgotten, like the tops of the feet, nose, lips and ears.
